Most Expensive Diamond Ever Sold at Auction Sells for $39.3 Million
The Princie Diamond, a 34.65 ct. fancy intense pink cushion cut, scored $39.3 million ($1.1 million a carat) at Christie’s New York, making it the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction. When exposed to ultraviolet radiation, the Princie diamond has a bright orange fluorescence, making it the largest pink diamond to display this unusual trait.
Although the buyer of this beautiful pink stone remains anonymous, this jewel also now the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction in the United States.
“Aside from Christie’s sale of the legendary collection of Elizabeth Taylor, this was the most successful jewelry auction ever held in the United States,” said Rahul Kadakia, head of jewelry for Christie’s Americas and Switzerland.
Other pieces of note from the April 16th auction were a 30.32 ct. rectangular-cut D color diamond, sold for f $4.4 million ($146,300 per carat) and a marquise-cut D color diamond ring by Harry Winston that sold for $3.2 million.
