Are Lab-Grown Diamonds GIA Certified?

What Buyers Need to Know in 2026

If you're shopping for a lab-grown diamond engagement ring, you've probably come across the term "GIA certified." But what does that actually mean, and how can you be sure the diamond you're purchasing has been independently evaluated?

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) evaluates lab-grown diamonds, but its assessment process changed significantly on October 1, 2025. Instead of using the traditional color and clarity grading terminology associated with natural diamonds, GIA now assigns qualifying colorless-to-near-colorless lab-grown diamonds one of two quality classifications: Premium or Standard.

For customers shopping at Mervis Diamond Importers in Washington, DC, Rockville, MD, or Tysons, VA, understanding this distinction is an important part of choosing a diamond with confidence.

With generations of diamond industry experience, GIA-trained specialists, and a reputation for personalized diamond education, Mervis helps customers look beyond labels to understand the quality of the diamond they're purchasing.

Does GIA Certify Lab-Grown Diamonds?

GIA evaluates lab-grown diamonds and provides independent documentation, although the term "GIA certified" is not technically accurate. GIA issues grading reports and quality assessments rather than certificates guaranteeing a diamond's value.

Under its current system, GIA provides a Laboratory-Grown Diamond Quality Assessment for eligible colorless-to-near-colorless lab-grown diamonds weighing at least 0.15 carats.

Qualifying diamonds receive one of two classifications:

  • Premium: Diamonds meeting GIA's highest criteria across all applicable assessment categories.

  • Standard: Diamonds meeting GIA's established minimum quality requirements but not qualifying for Premium.

Diamonds that fall below GIA's minimum Standard requirements do not receive this quality assessment.

This change matters because shoppers may encounter older GIA lab-grown diamond reports that use traditional grading terminology alongside newer assessments that use the Premium and Standard system.

According to GIA's official announcement, the updated assessment service launched on October 1, 2025.

How Does GIA Grade Lab-Grown Diamonds in 2026?

GIA evaluates several characteristics to determine whether a qualifying lab-grown diamond receives a Premium or Standard classification.

These characteristics include color, clarity, polish, symmetry, and cut quality for round brilliant diamonds.

A diamond must meet every applicable Premium criterion to receive the Premium classification. Diamonds with qualifying combinations of Premium and Standard characteristics receive Standard.

For example, consider two hypothetical one-carat round brilliant lab-grown diamonds.

Diamond A has D color, VVS1 clarity, Excellent cut, Excellent polish, and Excellent symmetry. It meets the listed Premium criteria.

Diamond B has G color, VS1 clarity, Very Good cut, Very Good polish, and Very Good symmetry. It meets the listed Standard criteria.

Both qualify for assessment, but they receive different overall classifications.

These classifications provide a useful starting point. They do not replace examining the diamond's appearance, proportions, and light performance.

At Mervis, our GIA-trained diamond specialists help customers understand these differences by comparing diamonds in person rather than relying solely on a classification.

How Much Does a GIA Lab-Grown Diamond Assessment Cost?

GIA's published laboratory fee schedule provides a useful example of how independent diamond evaluation works.

Effective October 1, 2025, GIA established the following laboratory assessment fees:

  • $15 per carat

  • $15 minimum assessment fee per diamond

  • $5 evaluation fee for stones that fail to meet the minimum assessment criteria

For example, the published laboratory assessment fee for a qualifying two-carat lab-grown diamond would be $30.

These are GIA laboratory service fees, not the retail prices of diamonds or necessarily the amount a customer would pay a jeweler for documentation.

The assessment fee also does not indicate a diamond's market value. A diamond's retail price is influenced by factors including its size, quality, shape, appearance, and market conditions.

How Can You Verify a GIA-Assessed Lab-Grown Diamond?

One of the most valuable benefits of an independent laboratory assessment is the ability to verify the documentation associated with a diamond.

GIA laser inscribes qualifying assessed lab-grown diamonds with the words "Laboratory-Grown" and a unique assessment number on the diamond's girdle.

The girdle is the narrow outer edge separating the top and bottom portions of the diamond.

Before purchasing a GIA-assessed lab-grown diamond, Mervis recommends taking three steps.

1. Request the GIA Assessment

Ask to review the diamond's documentation before completing your purchase. Confirm that the information corresponds to the diamond being offered.

2. Verify the Assessment Number

Use GIA's official website to access its report verification resources and confirm the assessment information.

3. Review the Diamond With a Specialist

A laboratory assessment describes important quality characteristics, but it cannot tell you everything about how a particular diamond will look in your chosen setting.

At Mervis, customers can work with a GIA-trained diamond specialist to review documentation, examine diamonds, and understand how different quality characteristics affect appearance.

Our approach is to educate customers before they purchase, so they know what they're paying for and why one diamond may be preferable to another.

Are All Lab-Grown Diamonds Evaluated by GIA?

Not every lab-grown diamond has a GIA assessment.

A diamond must be submitted to GIA and satisfy the laboratory's eligibility requirements. Other respected gemological laboratories, including the International Gemological Institute (IGI), also evaluate lab-grown diamonds.

An IGI report is not automatically inferior simply because it comes from a different laboratory. What matters is understanding the information provided, confirming the report is authentic, and evaluating the diamond itself.

For shoppers, the important question is not simply whether a diamond has a report. It is whether that report is legitimate, appropriate for the diamond, and clearly explained by the seller.

Mervis recommends reviewing the documentation accompanying each diamond rather than assuming every lab-grown diamond has been evaluated under the same system.

What Should You Look for Beyond a GIA Assessment?

A GIA assessment is an important piece of information, but it should not be the only consideration when purchasing a lab-grown diamond.

At Mervis, we encourage customers to pay particular attention to cut quality and the diamond's appearance.

A well-cut diamond can display exceptional brilliance and sparkle. Two diamonds with similar reported characteristics may still look noticeably different because of their proportions and how they interact with light.

When comparing lab-grown diamonds, ask your specialist to show you:

  • How the diamonds perform under different lighting conditions

  • Whether visible inclusions affect their appearance

  • How their proportions influence apparent size

  • How the selected diamond will look in your preferred engagement ring setting

  • What independent documentation accompanies each option

Frequently Asked Questions About GIA Lab-Grown Diamond Assessments

Does GIA still grade lab-grown diamonds using the 4Cs?

GIA changed its standard assessment process for qualifying colorless-to-near-colorless lab-grown diamonds on October 1, 2025. Its current system uses Premium and Standard classifications instead of the traditional natural diamond grading nomenclature. Older lab-grown diamond reports may contain individual 4Cs grades.

What is the minimum size for a GIA lab-grown diamond assessment?

GIA's current Laboratory-Grown Diamond Quality Assessment applies to eligible loose diamonds weighing 0.15 carats or more.

Is GIA Premium better than GIA Standard?

Premium represents GIA's higher overall classification and requires a diamond to satisfy the laboratory's highest criteria across all applicable categories. However, a Standard diamond can still be an attractive choice. Comparing its appearance and price with a specialist is more useful than selecting a diamond solely because of its classification.
